About Rocky Mountain Tops

Historic Estes Park Building turns 100 years old in 2008?

June 8, 1908 the Manford (Spelled "Monford" in the Longmont Ledger) Hotel was built by John J. Manford, (spelled Manford in the Estes Park 1900 Census) on the North East corner of Elkhorn and Moraine Ave. According to the Mountaineer (Estes Park's first, and very brief, newspaper), "the lower level contains the large dining room, ladies' parlor, gentleman's [sic] smoking room, office, etc. The upper floor is divided into guest rooms and commodious halls." it had 4 bathrooms and a sitting room. ...the Manford included a row of tents directly next to the hotel in case of overflow business.

Longmont Ledger (Longmont, Boulder County):

December 25, 1908, Josephine Hupp purchased the Manford (the year it was built) and immediately changed its name to the Hupp Annex.

Fort Collins Weekly Courier (Fort Collins, Larimer County):1909 Jan 06

The (original) Hupp Hotel was located diagonally across the street on the South West corner of Elkhorn (currently known as the Indian Village.) From 1908 until 1912, Elkhorn Avenue boasted two fine Hupp hotels, The Hupp and the Hupp Annex.

Josie sold the (original) Hupp Hotel in 1912 and it became the Park Hotel.

Fort Collins Weekly Courier (Fort Collins, Larimer County): 1912 May 03

The Hupp Annex (currently home of RMTops) was then given the name of simply The Hupp Hotel although it was not formally named this until 1932.

The Hupp (Formerly the Hupp Annex) was then owned by C.H. Bond (of Bond Park) from 1913 till 1917 when it is sold to the Derby family.  The Hupp entertained most of the early settlers in Estes Park.  A mass meeting in 1915 following the dedication of Rocky Mountain National Park resulted in the decision to send Enos Mills off to Washington to ask Congress for appropriations for roads and trails in the new park.

The Hupp survives a fire in 1922 and by 1926 has been enlarged. "... including the addition of a sandwich shop. The living room was also enlarged. Just to keep things confusing, the Derbys also built an addition in 1926, which they decided to call "the Annex.""

Estes Park Trail Gazette - Trail Plus. April 2, 2004, Estes Park Commuity Profile by JJ Rutherford of the Estes Park Museum and Lizy Scully - Hupp Hotel is a piece of history.

In 1982 The Hupp survives the Lawn lake flood.

In 1986 The Hupp is sold to the current owners and the name is changed to Rocky Mountain Tops.  No longer a hotel, this proud Estes Park Landmark, which can be viewed in many historical photographs of downtown Estes Park, is currently the favorite T - Shirt shop for locals as well as for tourist.
